THE ORPHANAGE (15)

(El Orfanato)

Dir: J. A. Bayona   1hr 45mins

Haunting and heartbreaking, The Orphanage is a superior thriller that delivers a double whammy of chills both real and supernatural. Set in a crumbling children's home recently reopened by ex-resident Laura (Belén Rueda), this Spanish supernatural thriller begins its assault after Laura's son Simón (Roger Príncep) vanishes on a sunny afternoon. Convinced Simón's stories about imaginary friends in the spooky building prove he's been spirited away by malevolent ghosts, Laura embarks on a quest to retrieve him that will push her to the limit of sanity.

Dir: Pete Travis   1hr 29mins

Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker, Matthew Fox

In Vantage Point Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quad) and Kent Taylor (Mathew Fox) are two secret service agents assigned to protect the President at a landmark summit. When the President is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and disparate lives collide. In the crowd is Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) a tourist video-taping the historic event to show his kids when he returns home. Also there is Rex (Sigourney Weaver) a TV news producer who is reporting on the conference. It's only as we follow each person's perspective of the same 15 minutes prior to and immediately after the shooting that the terrifying truth behind the assassination attempt is revealed.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA (15)

Dir: Mike Newell

Starring: Javier Bardem

Based on the highly acclaimed best-selling novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Four Wedddings & A Funeral), LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA is a smouldering fifty-year romance that will tear at the heart of all romantics.

When teenagers Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza meet, it’s love at first sight. However, after a prolonged absence with her family forced by her disapproving father, Fermina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) returns and marries a wealthy, well-born doctor instead. Florentino (Oscar-Winner Javier Bardem) is devastated and devotes himself to becoming a successful businessman and a prolific womaniser. But nothing can extinguish the flames of love he has for Fermina. When her husband dies, love-sick Florentino seizes his opportunity; exactly fifty years, nine months, and four days after he first declared his passion, he vows to do so again.

THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES (PG)

Dir: Mark Waters        1hr 36mins

Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, Nick Nolte, Joan Plowright

Young Jared Grace and his twin brother Simon (both played by Freddie Highmore) are non-too pleased when their newly single mom relocates the family to a creepy homestead in the middle of nowhere. Luckily for them, the house and its surrounds are infested with fairies, goblins and a great big ogre, all of them invisible until a goblin spits in your eye. Though it's pitched at the child–friendly end of the fantasy spectrum, The Spiderwick Chronicles is unexpectedly gripping and equally entertaining for adults.
